[Originally published June 23, 2011] Radioprogramas del Peru has reported that UNESCO has weighed in on the celebration plans and as a result, Peru’s government will be restricting access of journalists and the planned fireworks display at the ruins is being canceled. Most importantly the concert will not be held in the Citadel. Still no official word on where it will be relocated to.

As Peru prepares to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Hiram Bingham’s discovery of Machu Picchu, the chief of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, told reporters Monday that tourist access must be limited to protect and preserve the site.
[Originally published September 10, 2010] Peru’s Congress voted unanimously Thursday in support of building a new access road to Machu Picchu.
In a 75-0 vote, lawmakers declared that paving the narrow dirt roads connecting the towns of Ollantaytambo, Santa María and Santa Teresa, located northwest of Machu Picchu, is “a public necessity and a priority of national interest.”
