Peru’s Ministry of Culture has announced that Machu Picchu will be closed on July 6-7 to make way for the 100-year anniversary celebration of Hiram Bingham’s scientific discovery of the Inca citadel.

[Originally published March 7, 2010] The chief of Peru’s National Institute of Culture (INC) said Sunday that maintenance on the Inca Trail is on schedule for an April 1 opening following damage from torrential rains that also washed away portions of the train to Machu Picchu.
